Tomb Raider is originally a computer game played by many children and teenagers so the movie straight away has a target audience for youths but the charcter that they chose to play Lara Croft id Angelina Jolie a famouse actress which guys find very attractive so therefore gaining a secondary audience of older men as they would watch this movie to gaze at Lara Croft. The main focus is not her as her name isnt on the poster, the main focus is the movie , her name might not also be on the poster becuae she is that well known there is no need to tell people who she is.
There is a medium/long shot of Lara where we can see most of her body on the poster. She is is in a tight suit which shows of her curves which you can tell are digitally enhanced relateing to the times changing and technology changing and the fact that you can make someone look skinnier and more prettier using the computer, this puts pressure on young women to constantly look good and promoted an unrealistic veiw of how a women shpuld look.It also shows a bit of her legs which according to Mulvey subjects her to the male gaze. She is holding a gun in her hand which could represent a phallic object but also bring violence into the film giving and hint of genre even thoguh people who know Lara Croft would know it is an aaction movie just by having played the game previously. The gun copuld link tot he issue of the growing rate of gun crime in the UK and the USA.Even though this is a Hollywood production, it is distributed to the UK therefore promoting ideologies of gun crime and the fact that guns are cool and they fight of evil.
Sh eis behing a white light that is breaking through into the background. This could suggest that she is the hero and the ray of light that will save the day. she is covered by a shadow infront of her suggesting the evil in infront of her eyes but she is looking away making it seem like she is unaware where the danger is.
She isnt wearing much make up and her hair isnt in a fancy way, this tells us about Lara Croft herself and that she doesnt care about the way she looks she is just into fighting evil and being active. This related to her beoing a female protagonist heroine as apposed to there beong a male protagonist hero. There is a rise of females in the media playing more active roles whcih could be the result of feminism back in the 80's when wopmen were fighting for their rights and were made equal towards men
The main colour them is blue which couls suggestpurity and calmness which could be representing her as a person and also may connote deep blue see's which are mysterious and unknowing. This could also be reflecting upon her personality and maybe the storyline of the film

Meet The Fockers is a sequel to the successful Meet the Parents which was a funny, family film. The sequal is likely to have a similar genre and characters which tyou are familiar with so that it ensures as much success that the 1st movie had.
The main image is of the mother and father of both sides of the couple. They are on seperate sides to show the contrast of personalities that they have and the wondering factor of will they get along with eachother or will they hate eachother. You can see form the father of the brides side his face looks like the picture has been force taken and that he really doesnt want to be there but it shows he cares for his daughter and highlightes the main theme of the film which is family and the picture is photo framed which gives it a home feel because it looks like it is stuck on the wall of a home.
Ben Stiller is known for his comedy acting and is cuurently a famous actor. He is normally invovled in family comedies and plays a husband or a father, so the type of audience he attracts are the ones who are likely to watch this film such as families and people who enjoy comedies. He also plays in a leaind family role to relate to leading family members who are watching this film. This creates a sense of identification from the character to the audience, this draws the audience in more and gets them interested in the film.
The cat and the dog are walking on the mantle peice with a delecate vase in between them which is about to fall over. This could connote tradgedy but in a funny way because they are animals and looks like there will be small mistakes made to the disadvanteage of Ben Stiller or the father of the bride as their faces are the only ones whcih are not smiling in the family photo.
The women are represented as happy smiling people and their faces show they are content despite unhappiness of the two men. It makes them independant and care free and they are not worrying too much about the men however Ben Stiller dad is also smiling like the women which could suggest that the father of the bride is harder to please rather than the father of the groom whcih is a typical stereotype when a man is marrying a women.
The names of the actors are put at the bottom of the image. They are all well known actors and the names do not correspond with the person they are below, this shows that people know who these actors are and will watch the film based on the actorsthat are in it and not for the story line or the genre

practice essay

The clothes that James Bond wears is a suit and a bow tie, this states his class and tells us that he is an upper class and classy man and looks like a man in good shape and someone who likes to look good, he also looks very old fashioned and could hint a traditional man with manners and respect for others however this is contradicted with the gun he is holding in his hand connoting danger and violence within him.
There is a medium shot of him where you can see his face clearly with him holding the gun an him in his tuxedo. He has a content facial expression and seems to know what he is doing because he is looking straight at the camera with a confident expression as if he is on a mission of somekind.
In the background there is a shutter type hole in the centre. This could show that there is some spying involved in the movie where someone wishes to fight him or plot against him, this brings a narrative to the film of good vs. evil and tells us alot about the genre of the movie, it is an action spy film with a classy edge to it whcih we can see through the use of props and costumer, the props (gun) also relate to recent debates and issues about the rise of guncrime in the UK and because James Bond films are British and always successful they promote and glorify gun crime to teenagers and contributes to the growing rate of gun crime in the Uk today.
The main colours of the poster are black and red. Black connotates mystery and spying and Red connotates blood and danger which are generic themes in action movies. However there is a hint of white, this may represent the goodness in James Bond and purity of him and may suggest him to be the hero as his suit also suggests he is a mysterious man (black) with a hint of good (white) in him. These are also two contrasting colours which may highlight the link between good vs evil within the movie. However there is a red shadow casting upon the side of his face telling us that he may have some evil in him or is forced to do evil of some kind
Peirce Brosnan was a famous actor even before he starred in Jmes Bond and him being used in James Bond boosted the film as he is well knows for his great acting. He was in films like family action movies so his previous audience would be interestd to watch him in james bond as it is a similar genre and also something different.
The caption is 'Tomorow never dies'. This shows James Bond to be immortal and special and suggests him trying to save the world which could be represented with the hole in the background as it looks like he is guarding it with the gun as protection to fight of any evil.

Poster analysis

1. Use of celebrity endorsement. David and Victoria Beckham are two of the most famous celebrities in the world hence why there is no caption of any special words used to sell the product because just by looking at them and kowing who they are you know what kind of product and lifestyle they are selling. e.g Glamorous lifestlye, sense of unity and passion between them.
2. Victoria Beckham is being objectified where her back and legs are showing and it is David that is objectifying her because it appears that he is pulling her dress up and touching her up. This shows that David has the control over her. This is also illustrated by the fact that Victoria has her back to us and david is facing us and looking at us making him seem more important and highlighting the fact that Victoria wouldnt really be anything if it wasnt for him reflecting a patriarchal society. It appears that Victoria's role as a celebrity has flipped as she used to be in the 'Spice Girls' where they were promoting 'girl power' and now that she is married she is no long seen as an independant women. The man had taken all of that from her.
3. The logo appears to make David seem more important and bigger than victoria. The logo is 'DvB' the victorias anitil is smaller than Davids making her seem less important and making it more about David.
4. Victoria is wearing a light flowing dress connoting innocence and fragile-ness whereas David is wearing black connoting power and to a certain extent mystery and evil. The background matches to Davids colour scheme which may conote that Victoria is in his world and is in his power. This is illustrated by the way she is leaning on him and depennding on him and also by the way he is touching her.
5. Hetrosexula ideologies are being shown in this advert and their passion and love for eachother is used to sell the product so that consumers that aspire to have their lifestyle will want to buy the product

Execise 12.1: Analysing Tomb Raider

Through the use of media language we can clearly see the ways in which both men and women are portrayed in Tomb Raider.

Firstly by analysing Lara Croft dress sense we can clearly see that she is a character being objectified as she is wearing tight fitted clothing showing of her figure and shorts that show of her legs therefore being subjected to the 'male gaze' according to Mulvey.

Secondly in a scene the media language shows the film from a male perspective using shot reverse shot where we are put in his (Daniel Craig) position and see what he is seeing therefore once again portraying Lara as a sex object

However even though Lara Croft is seen as a sex object she is playing a very powerful role and is therefore seen as an active female and can be seen to an extent as a good role model. This is illustrated through the use of a gun which can be portrayed as a phallic symbol showing her to have all the power over males.

In Tomb Raider there is also a female gaze. This can be seen when Daniel Craig comes out of the shower and to an extent he is also being objectified by females. Another aspect of the female is gaze in Tomb Raider is when a low angle shot is used on Lara Croft. This shows in a womens point of view the fact that females desire to be like Lara Croft and portrays Lara to be fetishistic.
